It would have to be said that Mentalism is one of the hardest forms of magic. It is one of the types of magic in where your character and your stage presence really need to shine. I say this because most mentalism is not very gimmick heavy, or prop heavy. It is more based on mathmatics and mental mind feats. Some Mentalists that I know have actually caused to memory every single zip code in the united states and can tell you what city you live in. Others like my self have toiled over bending forks and have plenty of scars on their hand due to it. The one thing I can say is that in this form you must know all your outs and be able to have to gift of gab. Be able to think on your feet quickly. A lot of what mentalism is, is being a confidence man. You are making your audience believe that you are truly doing what looks more impossible than the usual. A card trick someone can pawn off as a mere trick. When you read someones mind, it becomes so much more. So in the end. Practice, practice, practice, and practice some more. Find a great old book and keep reading it. Create your own version and make it your own! One amazing book is 13 steps to mentalism. it is the bible as far as I am concerned!

Yes...agreed. '13 Steps to Menalism' is a great foundation book. I'm currently reading it. It's just jammed with material...every, single page! Do I sound like a salesman for the book or what lol...but, it's true.

I think that's what attracted me to mentalism. It's more or less gimmick free..or at least can be if you'd like it to be.

I had trouble understanding this 'strong character' thing when I first started to take learning mentalism more seriously. Liderc has given quite good explanations of why this is necessary on another discussion board as well. But, I now see why it is necessary. You can't pretend to be psychic if you don't really believe in such a thing or you won't be able to sell the belief to your viewers. So, since I don't believe in psychic ability, my character must present that I have either 'made' you say it (Though Painter) or I've predicted that you'd say it, choose it etc because I have such an incredible ability to analyse your physical inflections that I'm actually able to know your decisions as you make them. I couldn't ever sell that I'm a psychic and 'act' out all the patter that a psychic would present. I just wouldn't be believable in that character.

sounds like an interesting book ... i been wanting to figure out how mentalism works myself... hopefully it didnt have to do with this. i downloaded the latest episode of pssssych - water coin and somewhere in the middle of the episode C looked at the camera and said "EUROPEAN... your pants" and at the time my bro was watching the EURUSD market and it started stepping down like in crzy steps... so i paused pssssych for a minute to watch the market. maybe just coincidence but i think C needs to teach me some of his wallstreet skills. lol
