For me, books. I think magic books are great for learning. DVD's are good tools for learning moves, but a lot of great effects come from old books such as the Tarbell Course, Mark Wilson's book, and The Amateur Magicians Handbook by Henry Hay.

Books and DVDs are great, but nothing beats having a mentor. After a mentor, I would say it depends on what skill you are trying to master.

SPARKLY FLASH .... Um.....What was that for?

Nowadays, most magic books are filmed.
I think it's better to understand the movements.

Lucky for those having a mentor. Not me... have it hard and all have to do and find out bymyself and many times with no success

Books. Learn the effect, but make it your own. People who rely on DVDs tend to mimic the people they watch.

It's not really an item, but i think performing for spectators and their feedback whether it's crticism or their reaction will help you improve your skill and presentation.
